Summer Reading

Summer Reading Ideas
By Stephanie Avidon, Nassau Region Literacy Chair

During the summer make time to explore new books and read with your children.  Reading is fun and can be done anywhere – on the beach, at the ballfield, in the car and, of course, as a bedtime ritual.  It is important that your children read over the summer so they can continue to hone their skills and be ready to learn again in the classroom in September.

Here are three great resources you and your children can use to make reading fun while on summer vacation.

The New York State Library system has a summer reading program for young children and teens.  This year’s theme is “Tails and Tales”.  There are downloadable materials and free resources available as well as exciting online and virtual programming.  Check it out at   www.summerreadingnys.org/.

Scholastic’s summer reading program runs through September 3, 2021.  Kids who participate will be encouraged to read, celebrate their achievements, and help increase access to books for their peers. For more information, go to www.scholastic.com/summer/home/.

Barnes & Noble has a summer reading program which offers kids a chance to earn free books in July/August.  For more information visit www.barnesandnobleinc.com/our-stores-communities/summer-reading-program/.

Wishing you a wonderful summer that is filled with new adventures you have through your books!
